Frankly, I have no idea what the correct name of this pastry is. I heard so many different names for it, but in my family, we call them either “Prussiens” or “Coeur de France” (french heart). I prefer the last name, since they actually do look like a heart and appeal to the closet romantic that I am .
They are extremely tasty and are a perfect thing to bake, especially when you don’t have a lot of time on your hand. Another great thing is that you don’t need too many fancy ingredients to bake this stuff.
- A pack of puff pastry
- 50-200g sugar (as much as you like)
What you’ll need to do:
Lay out the puff pastry and carefully draw a line with your finger in the middle of it. Dredge one half of the puff pastry with sugar and fold it at the previously drawn line. Roll out the puff pastry until you get a nice and long rectangular shape. Fold it from both long sides towards the imaginary middle line and repeat, until you get a roll that looks like a heart in the slice plane.
Slice the roll into 2-3cm wide pieces and flatten them down. Put the pieces on a baking tray and bake for at least 10 minutes at 180°C (but only until they are golden). Make sure to let enough space between the pieces, as they will expand once they are in the stove.
Bon apétit! But be careful! Those Coeurs de France are quite addictive, especially since they are so easy to make
